Apple Unleashed Event: Highlights

October 18th saw Apple's Unleashed event.

New MacBooks, powerful chips, and AirPods were among some of the exciting new releases.

Continue reading for your Apple event roundup.

MacBook Pros
The redesigned MacBook Pros come in two sizes, 14" or 16", with slightly larger screen sizes at 14.2 inches and 16.2 inches. Perhaps most exciting is the amount of ports available - there's a HDMI port, three USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4, an SD card slot, and a high-impedance headphone jack - so goodbye dongles! According to Apple, the new MacBook pro has the best camera and audio ever in a Mac notebook - the top of the screen houses a 1080p camera for video calls with a wider opening that allows in more light, meaning we should expect better video call performance in dim lighting. Apple also state that these new MacBooks have the greatest battery life yet - 17 hours on the 14" and 21 hours on the 16". Prices start at £1,899.00.

M1 Pro and M1 Max Chips
The new MacBook Pro will be powered by two new chips - the M1 Pro and the M1 Max - and they are a serious improvement on last year's M1. Apple promises 70% better CPU performance and twice the graphics performance compared to the M1. While the basic architecture is still the same on the M1 Pro, Apple has massively improved the hardware, with a 10-core CPU that offers eight performance cores and two efficiency cores, along with a 16-core GPU with 2,048 execution units. The new chip also supports more RAM, with configuration options up to 32GB. Apple also announced the even more powerful M1 Max, which has the same 10-core CPU configuration, with eight performance cores and two efficiency cores. But the M1 Max doubles the memory bandwidth (to 400GB/s), RAM (up to 64GB of memory) and GPU (with 32 cores, 4,096 execution units and four times the GPU performance of the original M1). The M1 Max is the largest chip that Apple has made yet. But be warned: you will not be able to upgrade your storage or memory after purchase, so make sure you select the model that is right for you.

Airpods 3
The third Generation of AirPods enjoys an all-new design. The redesign features a new contoured fit, force sensor controls and a shorter stem. AirPods 3 users will enjoy longer battery life with up to 6 hours of listening time and wireless charging with MagSafe. If listening to music or podcasts is an essential part of your workout, then you will be happy to hear that these buds are sweat and water resistant. Additionally, AirPods 3 now also feature spatial audio, which was previously reserved for the AirPods Max and AirPods Pro models - spatial audio allows users to have a more immersive listening experience. AirPods 3 are available for £169.00.

HomePod Mini & Apple Music Voice Plan
HomePod Minis offer room-filling, 360-degree sound. The Unleashed event revealed three new colours for the Pod: dark blue, orange, and yellow. One of the other more unexpected announcements was Apple's new voice-only subscription plan for Apple Music. For £4.99 per month, subscribers can access their favourite artists and playlists exclusively via voice control with Siri.
