Apple’s Far Out Event: Everything you need to know

Yesterday, Apple commenced its annual September event announcing the new range of iPhone 14 models as well as the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8 and AirPods Pro 2.

Here, we have summarised everything you need to know about the new updates to Apple’s product range.

On Wednesday 7th September, Apple delivered a detailed 90-minute presentation to announce its lineup of products for their ‘Far Out’ event which took place in Cupertino, California.

Apple presented their event via a pre-recorded keynote to unveil their new products for the year. Some products included the 14th generation of their flagship smartphone, the new Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8 and the long awaited AirPods Pro 2.

We have some exciting fresh and new products for our iPhone 14 case line up which are live on our website today - some are in stock today and others are available for pre-order with expected delivery over the next few weeks.

iPhone 14: Plus, Pro and Pro Max

As expected, Apple announced the iPhone 14 smartphone as well as the newly named iPhone 14 Plus available at 6.1-inches for iPhone 14 and the Plus expanding to a 6.7-inch display. We see a farewell to the iPhone mini models and more focus on larger displays from Apple.

Despite a larger display, the iPhone 14 Plus separates from the iPhone 14 as having the longest battery life seen on any Apple smartphone yet. The 14 Plus offers up to 26 hours of video playback compared to the 14 which is only 20 hours.

The 14 and 14 Plus come in 5 new colours Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Product Red.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

The A15 bionic chip has made its way into the iPhone 14 and Plus models.  Apple typically upgrades the chip with each iPhone generation, however this year, they have gone with equipping the iPhone 14’s with the slightly updated A15 from last year with a new 5-core GPU which should translate to slightly more improved graphics performance compared to the previous iPhone 13 Pro models. Many incremental upgrades were presented between the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus with some features outlining larger camera sensors to the front and dual rear cameras for improved low light systems, action mode stabilisation on video and new crash detection sensors for hands-free emergency assistance.

Here is the Pro!

Apple has unveiled its high-end iPhone 14 Pro models, each with the new A16 bionic chip plus improved cameras. We see 4 new colours unveiled for the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max in Space Black, Silver, Gold and the new Prince-inspired, Deep Purple.

The notch is gone and replaced with the “Dynamic Island”. The Pro models were the pre-eminent product of the event demonstrating some new innovation updates from the iPhone 13 Pro. The new pill-shaped “Dynamic Island” works across the iPhone system and adapts for easier control and utilisation of apps and services.  Notifications fit behind the Dynamic Island, which is what Apple is calling the new Face ID sensor housing. You can tap and hold to find more options and controls. Dynamic Island enables new ways to interact with iPhone, featuring a design that blends the line between hardware and software for an integrated experience.

The new Super Retina XDR display has an HDR brightness at 1600 nits that allows for an Always-On display, a first for the iPhone. The Always-On display allows for time, widgets, and Live Activities to remain available at a glance at all times - despite if the iPhone is inactive.

The Pro models are also able to shoot uncompressed cinematic videos at 24fps and 30fps at 4K so smoother-looking videos alongside the improved action mode. With Emergency SOS via satellite you will also be able to share your location with friends and family in Find My when you're out hiking or camping in remote areas.

Apple Watch: Series 8, SE and Watch Ultra

The 8th generation of Apple Watch design-wise is exactly the same as the Series 7; however, many new internal features were introduced to the Series 8.

We see the same case sizes and display features as the previous models but Apple have introduced new temperature sensors focused towards women’s health. With 0.1 degree accuracy, the Series 8 model can better detect and track ovulation cycles using the temperature sensors. As previously speculated, the Series 8 also has introduced innovative new health features such as the ability to take ECGs and measure blood oxygen levels for a unified user health experience.

The long-awaited low power mode feature seen on iPhones has now been integrated to the Series 8 and SE models to give users up to 36 hours of battery life from one charge. We also see crash detection working alongside both Series 8 and SE for emergency assistance.

With a 49mm titanium case and the brightest Apple Watch display yet, Apple Watch Ultra was added to the extensive Apple Watch product range. The Apple Watch Ultra is designed for users in harsh/more extreme environments. With low power mode, the Apple Watch Ultra can exhibit up to 60 hours of battery life on a single charge for the longest battery life on Apple Watch. The new Action button in high-contrast international orange can be customised for instant access to a variety of features, including Workouts, Compass Waypoints, Backtrack, and more.

Apple designed the new Watch Ultra to be compatible with the 44/45mm bands despite the enormous 49mm case size so users can still use their old straps or shop new 44/45 mm watch bands for the new Watch Ultra.

AirPods Pro 2

Apple upgraded their AirPods Pro with a second version that includes an all-new H2 chip. The H2 is the successor to the H1, and enables new features like improved noise cancellation, a new transparency mode, and better audio.

The AirPods Pro 2 has the same design as the first generation of AirPods however, Apple have added an additional touch sensor on each AirPod stem to give users the ability to control and adjust the volume without the iPhone. We see improvements to transparency mode for modular adjustments to the users sounding and 2x better sound cancellations.

Apple has introduced speakers on each AirPod and the AirPods Case to allow Find My to easily locate a lost AirPod or AirPod case.

We have seen a lot of products and new updates to the Apple product range and we are excited to get our hands on these items once they ship from mid September.
